I’ve read multiple articles lately on how Witches are “a different breed.” As if spell casting, brewing, blessing, and a fascination with herbs isn’t considered different already…. Most of these articles focus on three main things.
1. The Wiccan Rede
2. Threefold Law
3. Take Responsibility for your actions
If there is one thing most Pagans agree on it is the Wiccan Rede. As a Witch, I don’t follow the Wiccan movement. However, the Wiccan Rede is an easy way to answer the question of right or wrong.
The Wiccan Rede, or Witches Creed – Long Form
Hear now the word of the Witches, the secrets we hid in the night,
When dark was our destinys pathway, That now we bring forth in the light.
Mysterious Water and Fire, The Earth and the wide-ranging Air,
By hidden Quintessence we know Them, and we will keep silent and dare.
The birth and rebirth of all Nature, the passing of Winter and Spring,
We share with the life Universal, rejoice in the Magical Ring
Four times in the year the Great Sabbat, returns, and the Witches are seen,
At Lammas and Candelas dancing, on May Eve and old Halloween
When daytime and nighttime are equal, when sun is at greatest and least,
The four lesser Sabbats are summoned, again Witches gather in feast.
Thirteen silver moons in a year are, thirteen is the Covens array,
Thirteen times at Esbat make merry, for each golden year and a day.
The power has passed down the ages, each time between woman and man
Each century unto the other, ere times and the ages began.
When drawn is the Magickal circle, by sword or athame of power,
Its compass between two worlds lies, in the land of shades of that hour.
Our world has no right to know it, and the world beyond will tell naught,
The oldest of Gods are invoked there, the great work of Magic is wrought.
For two are the mystical pillars, that stand at the gate of the shrine,
And two are the powers of Nature, the forms and the forces divine.
And do what thou wilt be the challenge, so be it in love that harms none,
For this is the only commandment, By Magick of old be it done.
Eight words the Witches Rede fulfill:
If it Harms none, Do what Thou Will!
Living by “If it Harms none, do what thou will” is not a nod to do whatever one feels like. Far from it. Before doing anything a Witch has to consider whether by his/her action will another be harmed either physically, mentally, or psychically. It is the reason a divination is always done to see whether an action should be taken. This brings us to the Three Fold Law, or Law of Three.
What you send out comes back to you threefold. This is something we all practice, often subconsciously. If you think about your typical day -you wake up, get ready to head out of the house, your car starts, you go to work…it’s a great day. By the same note, say your car won’t start, or you can’t find your keys, or you have a flat tire, or…. it becomes a bad day. Now think about how you react to both situations. When you have a good day you laugh, joke, smile, and you share that with others around you. When you’re having a bad day…you share that as well.
The same thing applies to a Witches actions. We focus on sending out positive energy. We know if we send out negative energy it comes back to us three fold or 3x3x3. Who wants that much negative energy? It would be like having a flat tire twice a day, everyday for the rest of your life. I don’t know about you but I would rather not have negativity in my life.
And that leads us to taking responsibility for our actions. It is all part and parcile of being a Witch. We have to think about everything we do. When we do something wrong, we can’t hide from it. We can’t blame it on someone else. The universe knows who did it. It remembers and will set right what went wrong. Worse yet, we know. As a Witch we’ve read the cards, watched the signs, said the words, and made it so.
We’ve asked ourselves all the questions – Will this harm anyone in any way? Will this take away anyones free will, or freedom of choice? Is this a necessary action, are there alternatives? Is this being done for revenge? What do the cards say? The answers matter.
All of these articles were about inspiring people to change their view of Witches and Witchcraft. It is why I fight to change the stereotype surrounding the word Witch. There is no evil in the craft, only bad practioners.
“The evil that is in the world almost always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence if they lack understanding.”
